Brain Center
Neurofeedback and other cutting-edge therapies help regulate the brain.
Neurofeedback & More
Our goal is to give you every advantage in your healing journey, so we use cutting-edge therapies to help regulate the brain, improving sleep, lessening withdrawal symptoms, and improving the treatment experience.
Our unique Brain Center is a calm, caring environment where a trained facilitator shows patients how they can improve their self-regulation skills. This safe space focused on wellness and healing employs state-of-the-art equipment that can be tailored to each individual’s current status, decreasing anxiety and improving the overall treatment process
Brain Center Features
Trauma, addiction, and mental health issues can cause dysregulation in the brain. In our innovative Brain Center, patients utilize state-of-the-art equipment to aid in grounding and self-regulation, so they are prepared to confront those deeper issues from a calmer place. This approach addresses the neuroscience of trauma by attempting to better regulate the limbic system in the brain, which allows for better integration and implementation of more traditional approaches incorporated in the treatment process.
Neurofeedback therapy
Neurofeedback is the direct training of brain function, by which the brain learns to function more efficiently. Through this noninvasive exercise, we can observe your brain in action from moment to moment and then share that information with you to help improve your treatment experience. In neurofeedback, the brain is rewarded for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns. Once we determine the level of the different brainwave frequencies, protocols are developed for training the brain to make more or less of specific frequencies. Neurofeedback is a gradual learning process, and it applies to any aspect of brain function that we can measure. The process can also be called “EEG biofeedback” because it is based on electrical brain activity, the electroencephalogram, or EEG.
Neurofeedback can be used to address:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- PTSD
- Attention deficits
- Behavioral disorders
- Addictive disorders
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Various sleep disorders
- Headaches
- Migraines
- PMS
- Seizures
Other Brain Center Therapies
The brain center is available to all The Meadows Malibu patients who are encouraged to use it regularly during their stay as part of their overall treatment program.
Biofeedback
Through the use of electrical sensors that receive information about your body, biofeedback helps patients learn to control bodily processes that are normally involuntary, including muscle tension, heart rate, and blood pressure. By learning how to relax certain muscles and calm the mind, the result is an ability to practice new, more positive coping mechanisms during stressful situations, which is particularly helpful to those in treatment and recovery.
CES
Cranio-Electro Stimulation (CES) employs a small modulated electrical current applied to sensors attached to the earlobes. It promotes sleep, relief from anxiety, and improved cognitive function for those who’ve struggled with substance abuse and mental health disorders.
HRS
Heart-Rate Variability (HRV) is a biofeedback device that helps patients learn how to relax and recognize their unique breathing patterns, synchronizing respiratory functions and heart rate for the better management of stress and anxiety.
Chi Machine
Providing a better mind-body connection and overall wellness, the Chi Machine oscillates the patient’s ankles in a figure eight pattern, helping with improved circulation, immune system function, and heart and lymph flow. By addressing these key centers of the body, it frees up the brain to function in a healthier way overall.
